Maize Market Size in CIS

In 2022, the CIS maize market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by X% against 2017 indices. Maize Production in CIS

In value terms, maize production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a strong increase. The country with the largest volume of maize production was Uzbekistan (X tons), comprising approx. X% of total volume. Moreover, maize production in Uzbekistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Azerbaijan (X tons), more than tenfold. Moldova (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a X% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Uzbekistan amounted to X%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Azerbaijan (X% per year) and Moldova (X% per year).

The average maize yield expanded slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, increasing by X% compared with 2021 figures. The yield indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize yield increased by X% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by X% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the maize yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the maize harvested area in the CIS totaled X ha, increasing by X% against the previous year. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of X%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Maize Exports

Exports in CIS

Maize exports shrank to X tons in 2022, dropping by X% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by X%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize exports rose notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Uzbekistan represented the key exporter of maize (green) in the CIS, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near X% of total exports in 2022. Azerbaijan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a X% share, followed by Belarus (X%) and Russia (X%). Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to maize exports from Uzbekistan stood at X%. At the same time, Russia (X%), Armenia (X%), Belarus (X%) and Azerbaijan (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the CIS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan, Russia and Armenia increased by X, X and X percentage points, respectively.

In 2022, overseas purchases of maize (green) increased by X% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, maize imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Russia was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached X% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kazakhstan (X tons), making up a X% share of total imports. The following importers - Belarus (X tons) and Kyrgyzstan (X tons) - each amounted to a X% share of total imports.

Imports into Russia increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kyrgyzstan (X%) and Kazakhstan (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kyrgyzstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the CIS, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Belarus (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Russia (X p.p.) and Kyrgyzstan (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Belarus (X p.p.) and Kazakhstan (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
