In value terms, the largest base station markets worldwide were China ($27.3B), Indonesia ($16.5B) and South Korea ($1.9B), together comprising 86% of the global market.

Production

World Production of Base Stations

In 2022, the amount of base stations produced worldwide expanded remarkably to 24M units, with an increase of 5.4% against the year before. In general, production, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 15%. Global production peaked at 36M units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, base station production amounted to $51.7B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $78.3B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (4.9M units), Indonesia (4.1M units) and Sweden (3.3M units), with a combined 51% share of global production. Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan (Chinese), Mexico, Poland and Hong Kong SAR lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +25.2%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

World Imports of Base Stations

In 2022, the amount of base stations imported worldwide contracted to 11M units, which is down by -8.1% on 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 13M units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, base station imports contracted to $4.2B in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a deep slump. Imports By Country

The United States (3.1M units) and South Korea (2.6M units) were the largest importers of base stations in 2022, accounting for near 28% and 23% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by the UK (689K units) and Italy (614K units), together comprising a 12% share of total imports. The following importers - the Netherlands (416K units), Germany (403K units), France (383K units), Brazil (379K units), Sweden (284K units), Japan (282K units) and Slovakia (190K units) - together made up 21% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Korea (with a CAGR of +10.3%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($536M), Japan ($498M) and South Korea ($340M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 33% of global imports. Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average base station import price amounted to $370 per unit, dropping by -3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 26%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $824 per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($1,768 per unit), while Slovakia ($29 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.6%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.

Exports

World Exports of Base Stations

In 2022, shipments abroad of base stations increased by 46% to 8.9M units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt slump. The global exports peaked at 15M units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Vietnam (1.5M units), Taiwan (Chinese) (1.4M units), Singapore (1.1M units) and Malaysia (1M units) represented roughly 55% of total exports in 2022. Mexico (482K units) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 5.4% share, followed by China (5.2%) and the UK (4.8%). The Netherlands (359K units), Hungary (266K units), Germany (232K units), South Korea (214K units), Italy (170K units) and Romania (140K units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +67.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($2B) remains the largest base station supplier worldwide, comprising 40% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($862M), with an 18% share of global exports. It was followed by Hungary, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled -6.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+61.7% per year) and Hungary (+2.2% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average base station export price amounted to $547 per unit, shrinking by -28.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 41%. The global export price peaked at $1,207 per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($4,220 per unit), while Malaysia ($41 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
