In December 2021, the average brown rice export price amounted to $766 per ton, with an increase of 156% against the previous month. Over the period under review, export price indicated a resilient increase from January 2021 to December 2021: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +5.2% over the last eleven months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on December 2021 figures, brown rice export price increased by +155.5% against November 2021 indices. The export price peaked at $801 per ton in April 2021; however, from May 2021 to December 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In December 2021, the country with the highest price was Burundi ($938 per ton), while the average price for exports to Democratic Republic of the Congo amounted to $154 per ton.
From January 2021 to December 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Burundi (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average brown rice import price stood at $643 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -12% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 141%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $2,132 per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($697 per ton), while the price for Romania ($156 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
