Buckwheat Price in Japan (CIF) - 2023
The average buckwheat import price stood at $960 per ton in July 2023, with an increase of 12% against the previous month. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2023 when the average import price increased by 17% month-to-month. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,134 per ton. From June 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Australia ($1,454 per ton), while the price for Russia ($605 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Buckwheat Price in Japan (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average buckwheat export price amounted to $1,132 per ton, surging by 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 254% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $2,886 per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to South Africa ($1,157 per ton) and France ($1,157 per ton), while the average price for exports to Australia ($1,006 per ton) and the United States ($1,156 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mongolia (+50.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Buckwheat Imports in Japan
In 2022, supplies from abroad of buckwheat was finally on the rise to reach 31K tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep slump.
In value terms, buckwheat imports skyrocketed to $28M in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction.

Buckwheat Exports in Japan
In 2022, shipments abroad of buckwheat decreased by -50.8% to 18 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 981%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 269 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, buckwheat exports shrank significantly to $21K in 2022. Overall, exports saw a dramatic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 335% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $277K. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
