The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 6.4% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 87M tons in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year. The general positive trend in terms output was largely conditioned by a notable increase of the number of producing animals and a relatively flat trend pattern in yield figures.

In value terms, chicken egg production reduced slightly to $228.8B in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $234.4B in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Production By Country

China (29M tons) remains the largest chicken egg producing country worldwide, accounting for 34% of total volume. Moreover, chicken egg production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (6.6M tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (6.5M tons), with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+6.0% per year) and the United States (+1.6% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Chicken Eggs

Global chicken egg imports soared to 3.4M tons in 2022, increasing by 73% on 2021 figures. In general, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chicken egg imports stood at $4.3B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports By Country

The Netherlands dominates imports structure, reaching 1.7M tons, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Germany (318K tons), Belgium (196K tons) and Hong Kong SAR (168K tons), together constituting a 20% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (111K tons), Singapore (88K tons), France (62K tons) and Italy (57K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into the Netherlands increased at an average annual rate of +10.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Belgium (+15.8%), the United Arab Emirates (+13.8%), Hong Kong SAR (+6.5%), France (+3.6%) and Italy (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +15.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-1.6%) and Singapore (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+19 p.p.), Belgium (+3.6 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-3.9 p.p.) and Germany (-8.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest chicken egg importing markets worldwide were Germany ($686M), the Netherlands ($498M) and Hong Kong SAR ($270M), with a combined 34% share of global imports. Belgium, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

The United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +9.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average chicken egg import price amounted to $1,265 per ton, declining by -37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,009 per ton, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($2,213 per ton), while the Netherlands ($289 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+11.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports

World Exports of Chicken Eggs

In 2022, overseas shipments of chicken eggs decreased by -13.3% to 1.7M tons, falling for the second consecutive year after seven years of growth. In general, exports recorded a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at 2.3M tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chicken egg exports expanded markedly to $4.5B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports By Country

The biggest shipments were from Poland (227K tons), Turkey (222K tons) and the Netherlands (214K tons), together recording 40% of total export. Germany (114K tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by China (107K tons) and Belgium (98K tons). All these countries together held approx. 19% share of total exports. The following exporters - Spain (71K tons), Malaysia (69K tons), Latvia (37K tons), Japan (31K tons), India (30K tons), the Czech Republic (28K tons) and Thailand (28K tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Japan (with a CAGR of +48.5%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chicken egg supplying countries worldwide were the Netherlands ($832M), Poland ($438M) and Turkey ($393M), with a combined 37% share of global exports. Germany, China, Spain, Belgium, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Japan, India and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 29%.

Among the main exporting countries, Japan, with a CAGR of +42.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average chicken egg export price amounted to $2,693 per ton, increasing by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, chicken egg export price increased by +77.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
