Cinnamon Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023
The average cinnamon import price stood at $4,825 per ton in July 2023, increasing by 12% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 194% m-o-m. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $17,849 per ton. From March 2023 to July 2023, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($26,332 per ton), while the price for Vietnam ($2,655 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sri Lanka (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cinnamon Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022
In 2022, the average cinnamon export price amounted to $12,249 per ton, rising by 59% against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 69%. The export price peaked at $14,284 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($15,168 per ton), while the average price for exports to Vanuatu ($3,680 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Samoa (+11.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Cinnamon Imports in New Zealand
After three years of growth, supplies from abroad of cinnamon (canella) decreased by -9.7% to 197 tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 218 tons, and then contracted in the following year.
In value terms, cinnamon imports contracted to $1.1M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $1.2M, and then shrank in the following year.
