Dry Bean Price in New Zealand (CIF) - 2023

The average dry bean import price stood at $1,510 per ton in August 2023, declining by -8.3% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in November 2022 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $1,681 per ton in May 2023; however, from June 2023 to August 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was China ($2,094 per ton), while the price for Myanmar ($1,221 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+3.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Dry Bean Price in New Zealand (FOB) - 2022

The average dry bean export price stood at $6,136 per ton in 2022, waning by -33.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average export price increased by 39%. The export price peaked at $10,206 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($11,197 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($2,000 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Dry Bean Imports in New Zealand

In 2022, overseas purchases of beans (dry) decreased by -2.1% to 6.8K tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 8.5K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean imports soared to $9.4M in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +12.6% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 42%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Dry Bean Exports in New Zealand
