In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware production declined to $35B in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +7.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 25%. Global production peaked at $46.7B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Production By Country

China (3.5M tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of plastic tableware and kitchenware production, comprising approx. 47% of total volume. Moreover, plastic tableware and kitchenware production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (782K tons), fourfold. Turkey (444K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 6% share.

For the seventh year in a row, the global market recorded growth in overseas purchases of plastic tableware and kitchenware, which increased by 5.3% to 3.1M tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +70.2% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware imports expanded remarkably to $13.7B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +12.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+22.4%), Singapore (+20.8%), Mexico (+5.1%), the Netherlands (+4.6%), Italy (+3.5%), Belgium (+2.9%) and Canada (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012-2022. Spain, Germany and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the UK (-1.1%) and France (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United States (+21 p.p.), Chile (+1.9 p.p.) and Singapore (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Germany, the UK and France saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.1% and -3.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($635M), with a 4.6% share of global imports. It was followed by Canada, with a 3.8% share.

Over the period under review, total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +23.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, plastic tableware and kitchenware exports rose sharply to $16.1B in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The United States (100K tons), Mexico (88K tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (81K tons), the Netherlands (75K tons), Italy (58K tons) and Germany (47K tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to plastic tableware and kitchenware exports from China stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Turkey (+10.0%), Mexico (+9.3%), the Netherlands (+6.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.2%) and the United States (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Germany (-2.1%) and Italy (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+19 p.p.) and Turkey (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the United States, Germany and Italy saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -1.8% and -2.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($10.3B) remains the largest plastic tableware and kitchenware supplier worldwide, comprising 64% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($564M), with a 3.5% share of global exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 2.9% share.
