Platinum Price in Switzerland (CIF) - 2023
The average platinum import price stood at $32.2M per ton in August 2023, approximately equating the previous month. Over the last twelve months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in April 2023 an increase of 15% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $34.6M per ton in May 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2023.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the highest price was recorded for prices from Canada ($36.8M per ton) and Germany ($34.9M per ton), while the price for Colombia ($28.0M per ton) and the United States ($28.5M per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Canada (+2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Platinum Price in Switzerland (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average platinum export price amounted to $30.1M per ton, dropping by -4.5% against the previous month. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 14% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $36.0M per ton in January 2023; afterwards, it flattened through to August 2023.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Canada ($95.2M per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($27.6M per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Canada (+9.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Platinum Imports in Switzerland
In 2022, supplies from abroad of platinum decreased by -14.4% to 31 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -34.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 47 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, platinum imports contracted remarkably to $926M in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 126% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $1.4B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of platinum decreased by -18.1% to 25 tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 123% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 40 tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, platinum exports declined notably to $811M in 2022. Overall, exports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 134% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $1.2B. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
