The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 7.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at 49M tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, polyethylene in primary forms imports expanded modestly to $72.2B in 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+8.5%), Turkey (+4.6%), Mexico (+4.2%), India (+4.2%), Poland (+4.1%), Spain (+2.4%), the United States (+1.6%) and Italy (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +8.5% from 2012-2022. Belgium, Germany and Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+4.2 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($11.7B) constitutes the largest market for imported polyethylene in primary forms worldwide, comprising 16% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($3.7B), with a 5.2% share of global imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 4.1% share.

The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 7.1%. The global exports peaked at 50M tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyethylene in primary forms exports dropped slightly to $64.3B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 40%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $67.3B, and then fell in the following year.

Exports By Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (8.9M tons) and the United States (6.5M tons) were the largest exporters of polyethylene in primary formsacross the globe, together finishing at near 33% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Iran (3.8M tons), Belgium (2.6M tons), South Korea (2.3M tons), Singapore (2.2M tons) and the United Arab Emirates (2.2M tons), together achieving a 28% share of total exports. The following exporters - Germany (1.8M tons), Thailand (1.7M tons), the Netherlands (1.5M tons), Canada (1.4M tons), Malaysia (1.1M tons) and Russia (0.9M tons) - together made up 18% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polyethylene in primary forms supplying countries worldwide were the United States ($9.4B), Saudi Arabia ($8.9B) and Belgium ($4.8B), with a combined 36% share of global exports.
