Preserved Tomato Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average preserved tomato export price amounted to $849 per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 10% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $1,008 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to August 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In August 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Canada ($966 per ton) and Costa Rica ($835 per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($667 per ton) and Japan ($689 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Honduras (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Preserved Tomato Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023

In August 2023, the average preserved tomato import price amounted to $1,728 per ton, surging by 12% against the previous month. Over the period from August 2022 to August 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 an increase of 13% against the previous month. The import price peaked in August 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($5,565 per ton), while the price for Mexico ($1,243 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Greece (+6.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Preserved Tomato Exports in the United States

In 2022, overseas shipments of preserved tomatoes decreased by -8.7% to 74K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 7.3%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 81K tons, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, preserved tomato exports reduced modestly to $65M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $67M, and then contracted in the following year.

Preserved Tomato Imports in the United States

For the fourth year in a row, the United States recorded growth in purchases abroad of preserved tomatoes, which increased by 21% to 25K tons in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +17.8% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +63.6% against 2019 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, preserved tomato imports surged to $32M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
