The average import price for cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted stood at $2,788 per ton in January 2024, which is down by -2.9% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in July 2023 an increase of 15% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $3,041 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to January 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In January 2024, the countries with the highest prices were the Netherlands ($3,267 per ton) and Indonesia ($2,986 per ton), while the price for Cameroon ($2,434 per ton) and Cote d'Ivoire ($2,588 per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+1.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
Price for Cocoa; Paste, Wholly or Partly Defatted in Malaysia (FOB) - 2024
The average export price for cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted stood at $2,681 per ton in January 2024, shrinking by -3% against the previous month. Over the last twelve-month period, it increased at an average monthly rate of +2.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 when the average export price increased by 21% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $2,764 per ton in December 2023, and then reduced modestly in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In January 2024, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($3,034 per ton), while the average price for exports to Cambodia ($242 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From January 2023 to January 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Cocoa; Paste, Wholly or Partly Defatted in Malaysia
In 2022, approx. 18K tons of cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted were imported into Malaysia; dropping by -42.2% compared with the previous year. In general, imports recorded a sharp setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year.
In value terms, imports of cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted reduced markedly to $45M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 82% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $64M, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Exports of Cocoa; Paste, Wholly or Partly Defatted in Malaysia
In 2022, shipments abroad of cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted was finally on the rise to reach 8.2K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback.
In value terms, exports of cocoa; paste, wholly or partly defatted soared to $18M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated mild growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
