Price for Iron and Steel Wire in Greece (CIF) - 2022
The average iron and steel wire import price stood at $1,802 per ton in 2022, growing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, iron and steel wire import price increased by +49.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($5,760 per ton), while the price for Egypt ($1,099 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+9.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Price for Iron and Steel Wire in Greece (FOB) - 2023
In September 2023, the average iron and steel wire export price amounted to $1,251 per ton, waning by -8.2% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 18% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $1,455 per ton. From January 2023 to September 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Serbia ($1,486 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kosovo ($902 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to North Macedonia (+0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Imports of Iron and Steel Wire in Greece
For the fourth year in a row, Greece recorded growth in purchases abroad of iron and steel wire, which increased by 12% to 34K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, iron and steel wire imports skyrocketed to $62M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +19.0% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
