Price for Spices; Nutmeg, Crushed or Ground in France (CIF) - 2023

The average import price for spices; nutmeg, crushed or ground stood at $14,281 per ton in June 2023, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous month. Over the period from June 2022 to June 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 34% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in June 2023.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Italy ($26,105 per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($10,978 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average export price for spices; nutmeg, crushed or ground amounted to $10,985 per ton, reducing by -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average export price increased by 13%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $26,796 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Portugal ($15,239 per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($8,091 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+26.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports of Spices; Nutmeg, Crushed or Ground in France

For the fourth year in a row, France recorded growth in purchases abroad of spices; nutmeg, crushed or ground, which increased by 15% to 648 tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, spices; nutmeg, crushed or ground imports soared to $7.1M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.7% against 2019 indices.
