In December 2023, the average export price for steel, alloy amounted to $2,851 per ton, picking up by 4.5% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild decrease. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $3,565 per ton in January 2023; however, from February 2023 to December 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In December 2023, the countries with the highest prices were Croatia ($3,523 per ton) and Austria ($3,083 per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($2,462 per ton) and Italy ($2,635 per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

The average import price for steel, alloy stood at $2,777 per ton in October 2023, shrinking by -42.5% against the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 66% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $5,318 per ton in April 2023; however, from May 2023 to October 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($4,081 per ton), while the price for Slovakia stood at $1,412 per ton.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, imports of steel, alloy surged to $18M in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 328% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $41M.
