Price for Steel, Alloy; Semi-Finished Products in Japan (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average steel, alloy; semi-finished products export price amounted to $569 per ton, declining by -15.1% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a mild reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in June 2023 when the average export price increased by 16% against the previous month. The export price peaked at $683 per ton in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to July 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($765 per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($418 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (-0.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In July 2023, the average steel, alloy; semi-finished products import price amounted to $3,726 per ton, rising by 274% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in December 2022 an increase of 321% month-to-month. The import price peaked in July 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Sweden ($21,059 per ton), while the price for China ($2,218 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Steel, Alloy; Semi-Finished Products in Japan

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of steel, alloy; semi-finished productses decreased by -19.9% to 339K tons in 2022. In general, total exports indicated prominent growth from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +21.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 30%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 423K tons, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, steel, alloy; semi-finished products exports shrank sharply to $211M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 97% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $270M, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of steel, alloy; semi-finished productses, when their volume increased by 76% to 16K tons. In general, imports, however, showed a deep reduction.

In value terms, steel, alloy; semi-finished products imports soared to $18M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern.
