The average import price for steel, stainless; ingots and other primary formses stood at $1,624 per ton in December 2023, flattening at the previous month. Overall, the import price showed a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2023 when the average import price increased by 9.5% m-o-m. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $2,327 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to December 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($2,695 per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($1,236 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From December 2022 to December 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average export price for steel, stainless; ingots and other primary formses stood at $4,026 per ton in 2022, falling by -43.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 200%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $12,533 per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($25,560 per ton), while the average price for exports to the United States ($2,860 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+18.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of steel, stainless; ingots and other primary formses decreased by -18.7% to 6.2K tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 93% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 8.7K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, imports of steel, stainless; ingots and other primary formses reduced to $18M in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.6% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +54.3% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 47%.
