In 2022, the average export price for tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped amounted to $4,499 per ton, dropping by -18.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $6,706 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($7,114 per ton), while the average price for exports to Indonesia ($3,428 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Jordan (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average import price for tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped stood at $4,751 per ton in 2022, with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $4,780 per ton in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Uganda ($6,022 per ton), while the price for Argentina ($2,301 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uganda (+17.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports of Tobacco; Partly or Wholly Stemmed or Stripped in Tanzania

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped, when their volume increased by 34% to 36K tons. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild decline.

In value terms, exports of tobacco; partly or wholly stemmed or stripped rose sharply to $162M in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump.

Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 283%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $9.2M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports of failed to regain momentum.
