Taro (Cocoyam) Production in Papua New Guinea - 2022

In 2022, approx. 277K tons of taro were produced in Papua New Guinea; leveling off at the previous year's figure. Overall, production recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 2.6%. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 278K tons. From 2019 to 2022, (cocoyam) production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure. In 2022, the taro (cocoyam) harvested area in Papua New Guinea fell slightly to 36K ha, standing approx. at 2021. In general, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 0.2%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to taro (cocoyam) production attained the maximum at 36K ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Taro (Cocoyam) Yield in Papua New Guinea - 2022

The average yield of taro in Papua New Guinea stood at 7.8 tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at 2021 figures. Overall, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 3.1% against the previous year. The taro (cocoyam) yield peaked at 7.8 tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
