Rye Price in Hungary (FOB) - 2023

In August 2023, the average rye export price amounted to $370 per ton, which is down by -5.3% against the previous month. In general, the export price recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in May 2023 an increase of 76% m-o-m. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $614 per ton in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to August 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($1,068 per ton), while the average price for exports to Serbia ($152 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Rye Price in Hungary (CIF) - 2022

In 2022, the average rye import price amounted to $343 per ton, growing by 40% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 56%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $1,181 per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($903 per ton), while the price for Ukraine ($272 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+7.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Rye Exports in Hungary

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of rye decreased by -24% to 6.7K tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 56%.

In value terms, rye exports fell to $2.8M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated strong growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +11.1% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 71%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $2.9M, and then contracted in the following year.

Rye Imports in Hungary

For the fourth year in a row, Hungary recorded growth in supplies from abroad of rye, which increased by 9.2% to 7.1K tons in 2022. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

In value terms, rye imports soared to $2.4M in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +61.8% against 2020 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
