China (164M square meters) ranked third in terms of total consumption with an 11% share.

The countries with the highest levels of silk fabric per capita consumption in 2022 were Belarus (11 square meters per person), Kyrgyzstan (7.4 square meters per person) and Russia (2.7 square meters per person).

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum level at $12.2B in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Production By Country
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Russia (393M square meters), China (221M square meters) and Belarus (100M square meters), together accounting for 58% of global production. The United States, India and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by the United States (with a CAGR of +13.8%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports
World Imports of Woven Fabrics Of Silk Or Of Silk Waste
In 2022, global imports of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste soared to 359M square meters, growing by 30% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports showed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 73%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 379M square meters. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, silk fabric imports rose significantly to $782M in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at $1.6B in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports By Country
Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of around 178M square meters, which amounted to 49% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Kyrgyzstan (50M square meters), comprising a 14% share of total imports. Myanmar (16M square meters), Italy (13M square meters), Senegal (12M square meters), Angola (11M square meters) and Oman (7M square meters) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to silk fabric imports into Nigeria stood at +25.4%. At the same time, Myanmar (+284.6%), Kyrgyzstan (+126.0%), Senegal (+77.9%) and Angola (+20.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +284.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Oman (-5.5%) and Italy (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+41 p.p.), Kyrgyzstan (+14 p.p.), Myanmar (+4.3 p.p.), Senegal (+3.4 p.p.) and Angola (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Oman and Italy saw its share reduced by -3.6% and -7.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Italy ($142M) constitutes the largest market for imported woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste worldwide, comprising 18% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kyrgyzstan ($20M), with a 2.5% share of global imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with a 1.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Italy stood at -4.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kyrgyzstan (+83.9% per year) and Nigeria (-12.5% per year).
Import Prices By Country
The average silk fabric import price stood at $2.2 per square meter in 2022, dropping by -12.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 73%. Global import price peaked at $7.4 per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($11 per square meter), while Senegal (less than $0.1 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

In 2022, the amount of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste exported worldwide surged to 110M square meters, jumping by 23% on the previous year's figure. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The global exports peaked at 227M square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, silk fabric exports soared to $996M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 24%. Exports By Country
China prevails in exports structure, reaching 59M square meters, which was approx. 54% of total exports in 2022. Italy (11M square meters) took a 9.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (7.2%) and South Africa (5.5%). Japan (3.9M square meters), India (3.4M square meters), South Korea (3M square meters), Uzbekistan (2.5M square meters) and France (1.9M square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to silk fabric exports from China stood at -7.4%. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+179.1%) and the United Arab Emirates (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +179.1% from 2012-2022. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Japan (-4.7%), Italy (-5.7%), France (-8.7%), South Korea (-10.0%) and India (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United Arab Emirates (+4.2 p.p.), South Africa (+3 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-2.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($453M) remains the largest silk fabric supplier worldwide, comprising 46% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($201M), with a 20% share of global exports. It was followed by India, with a 7.1% share.
In China, silk fabric exports contracted by an average annual rate of -8.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-4.8% per year) and India (-7.2% per year).
Export Prices By Country
In 2022, the average silk fabric export price amounted to $9 per square meter, with a decrease of -4.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $12 per square meter. From 2019 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($25 per square meter), while South Africa ($0.6 per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
