In value terms, sulphite wood pulp production shrank slightly to $14.6B in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 17%. Production By Country

China (2.8M tons) remains the largest sulphite wood pulp producing country worldwide, comprising approx. 20% of total volume. Moreover, sulphite wood pulp production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, the United States (1.3M tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Canada (860K tons), with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China amounted to +3.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: the United States (+1.3% per year) and Canada (+9.1% per year).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, sulphite wood pulp imports surged to $722M in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild slump. Global imports peaked at $845M in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

At the same time, Turkey (+21.0%), Sweden (+5.8%) and Indonesia (+5.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2022. Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-6.1%), China (-6.5%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.8%), Austria (-7.6%) and Italy (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United States (+41 p.p.), Turkey (+3.7 p.p.) and Indonesia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-1.9 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (-2 p.p.), Austria (-2.7 p.p.), Italy (-3.9 p.p.) and Germany (-5.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($237M) constitutes the largest market for imported chemical wood pulp (sulphite, other than dissolving grades) worldwide, comprising 33% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($91M), with a 13% share of global imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 7.2% share.
