Indonesia, Japan, Spain, Germany, Brazil, France, Mexico, Argentina, Italy and Canada lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

In value terms, the United States ($4.6B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($1.3B). It was followed by Japan.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the production volume increased by 24% against the previous year. Global production peaked at 144K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphonamides production declined to $7.8B in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 22%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $11.4B. From 2017 to 2022, global production growth failed to regain momentum.

Production By Country

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (53K tons), India (30K tons) and the United States (9.7K tons), with a combined 65% share of global production.

World Imports of Sulphonamides

In 2022, approx. 87K tons of sulphonamides were imported worldwide; increasing by 14% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 16% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at 253K tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sulphonamides imports dropped to $10.1B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 32%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $13.1B. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports By Country

In 2022, the United States (12K tons), followed by Spain (6.7K tons), the Netherlands (6.6K tons), Germany (6.4K tons), Brazil (5.6K tons), Indonesia (4.5K tons) and France (4K tons) represented the largest importers of sulphonamides, together comprising 53% of total imports. The following importers - China (3.7K tons), Argentina (3.1K tons), South Korea (2.9K tons), Russia (2.1K tons), India (2K tons) and Italy (1.7K tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Argentina (with a CAGR of +32.1%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sulphonamides importing markets worldwide were the United States ($2.6B), Spain ($1.3B) and France ($716M), with a combined 45% share of global imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Spain, with a CAGR of +38.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices By Country

The average sulphonamides import price stood at $115,510 per ton in 2022, waning by -18% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average import price increased by 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $180,118 per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($281,019 per ton), while Indonesia ($6,233 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Exports

World Exports of Sulphonamides

In 2022, shipments abroad of sulphonamides increased by 9.3% to 84K tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at 110K tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sulphonamides exports declined to $8.7B in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 16%. The global exports peaked at $10.9B in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports By Country

In 2022, China (27K tons) and India (22K tons) were the main exporters of sulphonamidesin the world, together mixing up 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (10K tons), South Korea (4.7K tons) and Belgium (4.2K tons), together creating a 22% share of total exports. The following exporters - the United States (2.8K tons) and Switzerland (2.5K tons) - each resulted at a 6.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the Netherlands (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Switzerland ($1.8B) remains the largest sulphonamides supplier worldwide, comprising 21% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($890M), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by Belgium, with an 8.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Switzerland amounted to +23.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (+4.5% per year) and Belgium (+8.6% per year).

Export Prices By Country

The average sulphonamides export price stood at $103,613 per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -17.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 36%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $145,365 per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($743,023 per ton), while South Korea ($9,571 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
