Tobacco Price in the United States (CIF) - 2023
The average tobacco import price stood at $22,831 per ton in August 2023, which is down by -5.1% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 10% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $24,060 per ton in July 2023, and then contracted in the following month.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Nicaragua ($47,363 per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($9,947 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Turkey (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tobacco Price in the United States (FOB) - 2023
In August 2023, the average tobacco export price amounted to $15,331 per ton, increasing by 9.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in January 2023 an increase of 22% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $18,365 per ton. From February 2023 to August 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In August 2023, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($37,446 per ton), while the average price for exports to Guatemala ($3,124 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From August 2022 to August 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+14.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tobacco Imports in the United States
In 2022, supplies from abroad of tobacco decreased by -5.3% to 90K tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 924%.
In value terms, tobacco imports contracted to $1.8B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2B, and then reduced in the following year.

Tobacco Exports in the United States
Tobacco exports from the United States totaled 21K tons in 2022, increasing by 8.4% against the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +14.4% over the period from 2019 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 32%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, tobacco exports expanded notably to $356M in 2022. In general, exports, however, faced a precipitous contraction.
