Tomato Price in Australia (FOB) - 2023
The average tomato export price stood at $2,600 per ton in September 2023, with an increase of 22% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2023 when the average export price increased by 26% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $4,780 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to September 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($7,004 per ton), while the average price for exports to New Zealand ($1,412 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to New Caledonia (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average tomato import price stood at $1,475 per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 58%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $2,481 per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for New Zealand.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for New Zealand amounted to -2.4% per year.
Tomato Exports in Australia
In 2022, exports of tomatoes from Australia contracted sharply to 849 tons, which is down by -17.1% against the year before. In general, total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +62.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1K tons, and then fell notably in the following year.
In value terms, tomato exports contracted to $3.6M in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 95% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $3.9M, and then fell in the following year.
