Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2023: its volume increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last eleven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, exports decreased by X% against 2021 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, petroleum bitumen exports rose markedly to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, exports saw modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2023 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the seven major exporters of petroleum bitumen, namely Russia, Hungary, Belarus, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Slovakia (with a CAGR of X%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Hungary ($X), Russia ($X) and Lithuania ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2023, together comprising X% of total exports. The Czech Republic, Belarus, Poland and Slovakia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
Slovakia, with a CAGR of X%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the export price in Eastern Europe amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by X%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while Belarus ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (X%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Eastern Europe
In 2023, overseas purchases of petroleum bitumen decreased by X% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of X%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, petroleum bitumen imports rose significantly to $X in 2023. In general, imports showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by X%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2022 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Romania represented the largest importer of petroleum bitumen in Eastern Europe, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2023. Hungary (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Poland (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), Ukraine (X tons) and Latvia (X tons). All these countries together held near X% share of total imports.
Romania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of petroleum bitumen. At the same time, Hungary (X%), Slovakia (X%) and Latvia (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hungary emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Eastern Europe, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2023. By contrast, the Czech Republic (X%), Poland (X%) and Ukraine (X%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Hungary (X p.p.) and Slovakia (X p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2023, the share of the Czech Republic (X p.p.), Poland (X p.p.) and Ukraine (X p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Romania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported petroleum bitumen in Eastern Europe, comprising X% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Hungary ($X), with a X% share of total imports. It was followed by Poland, with an X% share.
From 2012 to 2023, the average annual growth rate of value in Romania stood at X%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Hungary (X% per year) and Poland (X% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Eastern Europe stood at $X per ton in 2023, rising by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2023, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Slovakia ($X per ton) and Ukraine ($X per ton), while Latvia ($X per ton) and Poland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
