In terms of the main exporting countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +22.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in ECOWAS stood at $X per square meter in 2022, dropping by -5.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 111% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

By contrast, Burkina Faso (-1.6%) and Nigeria (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cote d'Ivoire (+11 p.p.), Guinea (+7 p.p.), Ghana (+6.2 p.p.), Mali (+5.4 p.p.), Sierra Leone (+4.6 p.p.) and Burkina Faso (+3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Senegal saw its share reduced by -40.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Guinea ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 50% share of total imports. Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 39%.

Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +16.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in ECOWAS stood at $X per square meter in 2022, falling by -3.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a noticeable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 105% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per square meter), while Senegal ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
