In 2022, Turkey (X tons) represented the largest exporter of oil crops (primary), constituting X% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together generating a X% share of total exports. Israel (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of X% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (X%) and Egypt (X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of X% from 2012-2022. In 2022, after eight years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of oil crops (primary), when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In value terms, oil crops imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of X% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by X% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of X%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Egypt represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at X% of total imports. Turkey (X tons) took a X% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Iran (X%), the United Arab Emirates (X%), Algeria (X%) and Saudi Arabia (X%). Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Algeria (with a CAGR of X%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Turkey ($X), Egypt ($X) and Iran ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined X% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Tunisia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further X%.
Algeria, with a CAGR of X%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by X% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Egypt ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
