Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tufted carpet exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +30.2% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the one major exporters of tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings exports, with a CAGR of +6.8% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest tufted carpet supplier in SADC.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per square meter in 2022, falling by -3.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -1.5% per year.

Tufted carpet imports shrank to X square meters in 2022, falling by -12.1% on the previous year. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +22.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X square meters, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, tufted carpet imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 41%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, resulting at X square meters, which was approx. 74% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X square meters), mixing up an 8.5% share of total imports. Mauritius (X square meters), Botswana (X square meters), Mozambique (X square meters), Zimbabwe (X square meters) and Namibia (X square meters) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to tufted carpet imports into South Africa stood at +6.3%. At the same time, Tanzania (+29.3%), Mozambique (+13.9%), Namibia (+13.5%), Botswana (+12.4%) and Mauritius (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+7.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zimbabwe saw its share reduced by -2.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tufted carpets and other tufted textile floor coverings in SADC, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+18.5% per year) and Mauritius (+3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per square meter), while South Africa ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
