In 2023, after three years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of alkali or alkaline-earth metals, rare-earth metals, scandium and yttrium, mercury, when their volume decreased by X% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, alkali and rare earth metals exports expanded notably to $X in 2023. In general, exports showed a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of X%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2023, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Rwanda (X tons) was the main destination for alkali and rare earth metals exports from Uganda, with a X% share of total exports. Moreover, alkali and rare earth metals exports to Rwanda exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burundi (X kg), eightfold.

From 2012 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Rwanda stood at X%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burundi (X% per year) and Tanzania (X% per year).

In value terms, Rwanda ($X) remains the key foreign market for alkali or alkaline-earth metals, rare-earth metals, scandium and yttrium, mercury exports from Uganda, comprising X% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burundi ($X), with an X% share of total exports.

Overall, the export price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2023, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Tanzania (X%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Uganda

In 2023, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of alkali or alkaline-earth metals, rare-earth metals, scandium and yttrium, mercury, when their volume increased by X% to X tons. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, alkali and rare earth metals imports amounted to $X in 2023. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of X% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Kenya (X kg), China (X kg) and India (X kg) were the main suppliers of alkali and rare earth metals imports to Uganda, with a combined X% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for Kenya (with a CAGR of X%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest alkali and rare earth metals suppliers to Uganda were Kenya ($X), India ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for X% of total imports. Tanzania and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further X%.
