Chocolate Price in Latvia (CIF) - 2023

The average chocolate import price stood at $4,795 per ton in September 2023, which is down by -15% against the previous month. Overall, import price indicated a moderate increase from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, chocolate import price increased by +23.3% against June 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2023 when the average import price increased by 23% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $5,644 per ton, and then dropped sharply in the following month.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Poland ($8,754 per ton), while the price for Sweden ($3,113 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+4.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chocolate Price in Latvia (FOB) - 2023

The average chocolate export price stood at $6,749 per ton in September 2023, picking up by 49% against the previous month. In general, export price indicated a noticeable expansion from September 2022 to September 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +4.9% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on September 2023 figures, chocolate export price increased by +68.3% against December 2022 indices. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In September 2023, the country with the highest price was Poland ($10,896 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($5,459 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From September 2022 to September 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Chocolate Imports in Latvia

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa, when their volume decreased by -3.3% to 2.3K tons. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +19.2% over the last three-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +69.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of 2.4K tons, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, chocolate imports dropped to $7.9M in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated significant growth from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +20.2% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $8.2M, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of chocolate and other food preparations containing cocoa decreased by -37.4% to 579 tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 17%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of 1.2K tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, chocolate exports reduced notably to $2.4M in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $4.8M. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
