Potato Price in China (FOB) - 2023
In June 2023, the average potato export price amounted to $653 per ton, declining by -4.8% against the previous month. Over the last nine months, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in February 2023 an increase of 28% m-o-m. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $742 per ton. From March 2023 to June 2023, the the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($1,037 per ton), while the average price for exports to Sri Lanka ($285 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From September 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Vietnam (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Potato Price in China (CIF) - 2022
The average potato import price stood at $880 per ton in 2021, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average import price increased by 68%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the maximum at $1,349 per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Vietnam.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for the Netherlands amounted to +33.9% per year.
Potato Exports in China
In 2022, overseas shipments of potatoes increased by 16% to 452K tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable setback.
In value terms, potato exports surged to $249M in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage.
