In 2022, the average export price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses amounted to $7,782 per ton, dropping by -47.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $23,385 per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($50,704 per ton), while the average price for exports to Albania ($1,413 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Turkey (-4.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Overall, import price indicated pronounced growth from November 2022 to November 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +3.3% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on November 2023 figures, import price for ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses decreased by -26.8% against September 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in January 2023 when the average import price increased by 79% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $5,389 per ton in September 2023; however, from October 2023 to November 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In November 2023, the country with the highest price was Germany ($8,622 per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($927 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From November 2022 to November 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the amount of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses exported from Greece soared to 866 tons, growing by 44% compared with 2021. Overall, exports showed significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 71%. The exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of ginger, saffron, tumeric (curcuma), thyme, bay leaves, curry and other spiceses dropped notably to $6.7M in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2019 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% over the last three-year period.
