Production By Country

Turkey (346K tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of shelled hazelnut production, accounting for 63% of total volume. Moreover, shelled hazelnut production in Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Italy (70K tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Azerbaijan (25K tons), with a 4.5% share.

In Turkey, shelled hazelnut production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Italy (+4.5% per year) and Azerbaijan (+5.3% per year).

Imports

World Imports of Shelled Hazelnuts

In 2022, supplies from abroad of shelled hazelnuts decreased by -0.7% to 269K tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at 271K tons in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut imports shrank sharply to $1.6B in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 26%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $2.3B. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports By Country

Germany (73K tons) and Italy (64K tons) represented the major importers of shelled hazelnuts in 2022, reaching approx. 27% and 24% of total imports, respectively. Import Prices By Country

In 2022, the average shelled hazelnut import price amounted to $5,967 per ton, falling by -18.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average import price increased by 27%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $10,744 per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($8,789 per ton), while Russia ($4,472 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

World Exports of Shelled Hazelnuts

After six years of growth, shipments abroad of shelled hazelnuts decreased by -0.3% to 282K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 11%. The global exports peaked at 283K tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, shelled hazelnut exports shrank dramatically to $1.6B in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at $2.3B in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports By Country

Turkey prevails in exports structure, recording 180K tons, which was near 64% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Italy (22K tons), Azerbaijan (20K tons), Chile (17K tons) and Georgia (16K tons), together committing a 27% share of total exports. The United States (8.2K tons) and Germany (4.8K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to shelled hazelnut exports from Turkey stood at +1.1%. At the same time, Chile (+66.4%), the United States (+17.9%), Azerbaijan (+7.1%), Italy (+4.5%) and Georgia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +66.4% from 2012-2022. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Chile (+6.1 p.p.), Azerbaijan (+2.5 p.p.) and the United States (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Turkey (-10.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Turkey ($969M) remains the largest shelled hazelnut supplier worldwide, comprising 59% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($171M), with a 10% share of global exports. It was followed by Chile, with a 7.4% share.

In Turkey, shelled hazelnut exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+5.2% per year) and Chile (+62.9% per year).

Export Prices By Country

In 2022, the average shelled hazelnut export price amounted to $5,798 per ton, reducing by -20.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $10,913 per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($8,602 per ton), while Georgia ($4,961 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
