Dairy Spread Market Size in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Latin American dairy spread market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, approximately reflecting the previous year. Exports in Latin America and the Caribbean

Dairy spread exports reached X tons in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year's figure. In general, exports recorded a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 181%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dairy spread exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -19.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 150%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Venezuela (X tons) was the largest exporter of dairy spreads, mixing up 54% of total exports. Honduras (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Uruguay (14%) and Argentina (5.4%). Brazil (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Venezuela decreased at an average annual rate of -6.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Brazil (+36.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +36.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Honduras (-1.9%), Uruguay (-2.1%) and Argentina (-10.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Venezuela, Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil increased by +54, +14, +5.4 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Venezuela ($X), Honduras ($X) and Uruguay ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 92% share of total exports. Argentina and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +15.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Latin America and the Caribbean stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uruguay ($X per ton), while Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Honduras (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Latin America and the Caribbean

In 2022, the amount of dairy spreads imported in Latin America and the Caribbean declined to X tons, which is down by -6.1% on 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, dairy spread imports totaled $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Honduras represented the main importer of dairy spreads in Latin America and the Caribbean, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 35% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Peru (X tons), Panama (X tons), Chile (X tons), Bahamas (X tons) and Haiti (X tons), together committing a 48% share of total imports. The following importers - Colombia (X tons) and Cayman Islands (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.7% share of total imports.

Imports into Honduras increased at an average annual rate of +25.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Chile (+152.0%), Colombia (+73.4%), Panama (+63.1%), Haiti (+23.7%), Peru (+20.2%), Cayman Islands (+15.8%) and Bahamas (+15.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Chile emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a CAGR of +152.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Honduras, Panama, Peru, Chile, Haiti, Bahamas and Colombia increased by +28, +11, +10, +10, +3.8, +3.6 and +3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Honduras ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported dairy spreads in Latin America and the Caribbean, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Panama ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Chile, with an 11% share.

In Honduras, dairy spread imports expanded at an average annual rate of +28.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Panama (+96.5% per year) and Chile (+158.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Latin America and the Caribbean amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.1% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while Colombia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
