In 2021, shipments abroad of quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a sharp downturn. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, quilted textile products exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a sharp descent. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 67% of total exports. Egypt (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Morocco (X tons). All these countries together took near 30% share of total exports. Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to quilted textile products exports from Turkey stood at -7.3%. At the same time, Israel (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in MENA, with a CAGR of +20.8% from 2012-2021. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-37.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+60 p.p.), Morocco (+5.9 p.p.) and Israel (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -67.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), Turkey ($X) and Morocco ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 97% of total exports. These countries were followed by Israel, which accounted for a further 1.9%.

Israel, with a CAGR of +11.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 31%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+5.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in MENA

In 2021, the amount of quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery) imported in MENA was estimated at X tons, growing by 14% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, quilted textile products imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 52%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) was the major importer of quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery), comprising 62% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Turkey (5.4%). Algeria (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery) imports, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Algeria (+17.7%), Turkey (+9.4%) and the United Arab Emirates (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Egypt (+47 p.p.) and Algeria (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tunisia and Morocco saw its share reduced by -3.6% and -17.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported quilted textile products in the piece (excluding embroidery) in MENA, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Egypt totaled +24.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-5.0% per year) and Turkey (+11.9% per year).

The import price in MENA stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
