The global composition leather market rose significantly to $X in 2021, increasing by 8.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a pronounced descent. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of composition leather, when their volume increased by 16% to X square meters. In general, exports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the global exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, composition leather exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 16%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of composition leather, namely Germany, Vietnam, Italy and China, represented more than half of total export. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X square meters), mixing up a 4.8% share of total exports. The following exporters - Hong Kong SAR (X square meters), Taiwan (Chinese) (X square meters), Turkey (X square meters), South Africa (X square meters), Spain (X square meters), the United States (X square meters) and Slovenia (X square meters) - together made up 21% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +18.6%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) emerged as the largest composition leather supplier worldwide, comprising 26% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 12% share.

In Vietnam, composition leather exports increased at an average annual rate of +11.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-3.6% per year) and South Korea (+7.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average composition leather export price amounted to $X per square meter, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a measured increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per square meter), while Slovenia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+29.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of composition leather decreased by -24.2% to X square meters, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -45.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 43%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X square meters. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, composition leather imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cambodia (X square meters) represented the main importer of composition leather, constituting 41% of total imports. The Dominican Republic (X square meters) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Nigeria (7%). India (X square meters), China (X square meters), Hong Kong SAR (X square meters), Vietnam (X square meters), Italy (X square meters), the Philippines (X square meters), Turkey (X square meters), Lesotho (X square meters) and Russia (X square meters) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Cambodia increased at an average annual rate of +20.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lesotho (+28.1%), India (+15.8%), Nigeria (+7.4%), the Dominican Republic (+6.2%), the Philippines (+4.8%) and Russia (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lesotho emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012-2021. Turkey experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Vietnam (-6.9%), China (-8.6%), Hong Kong SAR (-12.8%) and Italy (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cambodia (+32 p.p.), the Dominican Republic (+3.6 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.8 p.p.), India (+2.6 p.p.) and Lesotho (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-2.4 p.p.), China (-5 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (-6.3 p.p.) and Italy (-7.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In Cambodia, composition leather imports expanded at an average annual rate of +21.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Dominican Republic (+1.9% per year) and China (-1.1% per year).

The average composition leather import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, rising by 66% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
