Potato Price in South Africa (FOB) - 2023

In July 2023, the average potato export price amounted to $280 per ton, picking up by 2.1% against the previous month. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in April 2023 an increase of 16% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $292 per ton. From May 2023 to July 2023, the the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In July 2023, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($606 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mozambique ($203 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From July 2022 to July 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mozambique (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Potato Price in South Africa (CIF) - 2022

The average potato import price stood at $488 per ton in 2022, declining by -29.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 150%. The import price peaked at $701 per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($552 per ton), while the price for Namibia ($200 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.

Potato Exports in South Africa

For the fourth year in a row, South Africa recorded growth in shipments abroad of potatoes, which increased by 2% to 185K tons in 2022. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 4.9%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, potato exports fell to $48M in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2019 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $51M, and then fell in the following year.

Potato Imports in South Africa

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of potatoes, when their volume decreased by -17.7% to 442 tons. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a strong increase from 2019 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last three years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +26.5% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. As a result, imports attained the peak of 537 tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, potato imports dropped notably to $216K in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $370K, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
